When purchasing a coffee machine there are a few things that need to be considered, whether it be for a commercial machine or a personal machine for home. Commercial machines come in many different sizes and types. They can also be used by many different people, for all different reasons. When it comes to picking the right espresso coffee machine, it is really easy to become overwhelmed with all the different types. That is why we have decided to make things easy for future customers by giving you all the information you may need when purchasing a commercial espresso coffee machine.
There are multiple different types of commercial espresso coffee machines; Volumetric, Semi Automatic, Manual Paddle and Manual Lever. Each machine is used in different ways, and everyone will have their own preferences when it comes to using and choosing their own espresso coffee machines. We are more than happy to help you choose the type of machine for you, whether its based on aesthetic or function.
As mentioned before there are a few different types of machines that you can choose from, first let’s talk about the most commonly seen, the volumetric machine. The Volumetric machine is the machine that you will see in most cafes and restaurants, they are generally the first choice as they are the most efficient machines and require the smallest amount of manual labour from the barista. The reason these machines are less labour intensive is because each of their groups can be programmed to produce a different sized shot, be it a single, double, or long shot. Volumetric commercial espresso coffee machines are very simple to use, and as they are quite time efficient they can be used anywhere that wishes to serve coffee, with minimal effort and lovely results. Pictured below is a volumetric commercial machine.
You will also find that every coffee machine brand will produce volumetric machines, in general, commercial machines are mainly made volumetric. So no matter what brand you are after, be it La Marzocco, Wega, Kees Van Der Westen and many more you will be able to get a volumetric machine.
The next type of machine that you can choose from is a semi automatic espresso coffee machine. This type of machine is also very simple to use, rather than having multiple buttons for the group there is only one which the barista uses to start and stop the espresso shot manually. Both Commercial and domestic machines are produced in a semi automatic model, however it is more common in domestic machines than commercial machines. Pictured below is an example of a semi automatic commercial espresso coffee machine.
Semi automatic machines require a little more efforton behalf of the barista as they will be incharge of the shot timing and quality. As mentioned before, a lot of domestic machines are semi automatic, however a few top brands produce semi automatic machines such as La Marzocco. These machines may not be common, but they will do exactly what you need them to do and will produce an amazing espresso.
The next type of machines that you will find in the commercial market are the manual versions. These machines come in two types, manual paddle and lever. These machines are unique and not as commonly seen in many cafes and restaurants. This is as they are usually more labour intensive for baristas, but that does not mean that they should not be considered when purchasing a machine. Manual machines have a very eye catching look, they also provide the barista with an astounding amount of control over the brewing process, meaning that you can produce your espresso in the exact way that you want it. To the right is one example of a manual paddle commercial machine.
Manual machines would be a fantastic choice for a cafe, bar or restaurant that want to use their machines to draw customers but do not expect a massive volume of coffee, because then you can focus on your shots and use the manual machine how you are supposed to, and get the best quality espresso that you can. Below you can see an example of a lever machine.
